On 21 August, UNU-IAS and the Asia Pacific Centre for Ecohydrology (APCE) co-organized a workshop to disseminate the UNU-IAS Water and Urban Initiative (WUI)’s findings in Jakarta as well as provide hands-on training for water quality projection and the WUI flood risk and damage assessment model. The workshop aimed to: i) share with stakeholders the final simulation results of the project’s Jakarta case study and ii) discuss how the city can better address future risks of flood and water quality deterioration, and ultimately contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss challenges and solutions amongst a wide range of practitioners to ensure the implementation of WUI findings and integrated wastewater and flood management in the city of Jakarta. The workshop brought together practitioners and experts from the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, as well as the DKI Jakarta provincial government.
Oswar Muadzin Mungkasa, Deputy Governor of Jakarta for Spatial Planning and Environment, stressed in his opening remarks that there is an urgent need to bridge research and policy with a holistic approach in addressing water issues in Jakarta. WUI researchers have suggested improvement for water quality and flood risk by 2030 if the city implements the proposed master plan. Moreover, the research findings also point out priority areas and measures for Jakarta. The WUI results have demonstrated that upstream management of the Ciliwing River will require greater attention in the future. Indeed, in the discussion, the management of more than 100 small lakes and ponds in the area was discussed as an effective approach in managing future flood risk.
Deputy Director for Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia, Ir. Arif Wibowo emphasized that the WUI outputs and the outcomes of the workshop discussion are valuable contributions to Jakarta.
Towards the end of 2017, the results of all WUI case studies as well as related tools will be uploaded to this website.
